Skills to Master to Be More Productive

Tim Ferriss

(6 minutes)

Tim Ferriss is absolutely full of helpful knowledge! This video doesn’t have any habits that I personally picked up (though silent meditation is a fav. habit of mine) but it offers a good preview at his perspective – perhaps he resonates with your style!

  • [00:19] Tip #1 : Morning Meditation
    • Ferriss only was able to adhere once he tried Transcendental Meditation (mantra based method).
    • Ferriss isn’t fully behind the method but it worked because he met with an instructor regularly and needed to report progress.
    • Headspace is also a good idea (*Bianca Note: I like this app for what it was).
    • Running can also be meditative if done intentionally.
    • Gratefulness is also an important component.
  • [03:42] Tip #2 : Getting Better at Asking Questions
    • Some questions are better than others.
    • “Why can’t you achieve your ten year goals in the next six months?” – Peter Thiel
      • It’s a great thought experiment.

  • Introduction
    • Pomodoro
    • Declutter
    • Classical music
    • Don’t procrastinate
  • [00:45] 2 Push-ups + 1 Shower
    • (1) What is happening when you’re stuck in a bad habit
      • Identify what is craving your distraction
    • (2) Chaining behaviors
      • Make the chained behavior a small step
    • So, do 2 pushups each time you are distracted. If you’re messing around, you might as well work out. This also increased blood flood which increases focused and usually therefore willpower. It also keeps you on task if you don’t want to have to do pushups
  • [05:18] Shower
    • If you’re needing creativity instead of will power, take a shower
    • It could also be a distraction free walk or something similar
    • The warm shower does have the benefit of a dopamine boost which is linked to better creativity
  • [06:30] Barbara Oakley : Diffuse v. Focused Mode
    • Like pinball machine with focused mode having several tight bumpers
  • [07:18] Flow State
    • Steven Kotler describes the state as “An optimal state of consciousness where you feel totally absorbed in the task at hand and all aspects of performance mental and physical go through the roof”
    • High-stakes moments are easy entrances to the flow state
    • Loop:
      • Struggle at a challenge
      • Release
      • Flow
      • Recover
